Celebrating Muslim / Jewish Unity at Nahalat Shalom

On Sunday, January 7th, the congregation at Nahalat Shalom in Albuquerque celebrated the installation of magnificent new entry doors created by Hershel Weiss. The doors took over 3 years to make and are the masterpiece to date of the nationally known wood artist. They are exact replicas of Jewish temple doors in Spain, combining the Star of David and the Star of Islam. They commemorate the centuries that Spanish Jews and Muslims lived together in harmony.  <back to main News page>

Clergy from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Native American and Buddhist faiths were present to bless the doors, and Jitsudo Sensei delivered the Buddhist blessing, leading the crowd in chanting the Kannon or Kuan Yin chant of compassion, the Emmei Jukku Kannon Gyo. He dedicated the chant to the “beauty of diversity.”
