Meditation Class for Youth
Jitsudo, along with three other volunteers, has been teaching meditation twice a week at Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center, a 36-bed residential treatment center for youth in Albuquerque. All of the boys have a history of violent crime, with treatable mental illness. Sequoyah utilizes a compassionate multidisciplinary team approach to treatment in a culturally sensitive environment that addresses the individual needs of the resident. The meditation work, in six short weeks, has had a noticeable impact on a few of the boys, two of whom will start to teach meditation to others in the second stage of this program, starting at the end of May. These two boys already have a daily meditation practice on their own.
The Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center is under the direction of the New Mexico Department of Health.
